The Paper Recycling Map: Sappi Charts a Course Forward
Recycling paper is a great way to reduce our environmental footprint. Over the last twenty years there has been a decline in global deforestation, partly due to the increased use of recycled paper and the purchasing of paper products that are certified as coming from responsibly managed forests. However, recycling is not that straightforward, and deforestation still remains a problem. 4.26.2013

Future Of Print: 'Fully Booked: Ink On Paper' Showcases Amazing Innovations In Physical Books
Let me state this for the record: The internet is not dead. Digital will not disappear. Print will not kill the web. It's easy to forget that, when physical books were invented, professional websites first ignored them, and then laughed at them as a niche pursuit for geeks. Now here we are, and the same writers are declaring the Death of the Internet, as the hype and excitement surrounding print and paper travels inexorably around the world. News companies have even themselves rushed into creating 'news-papers', long before any clear business model has emerged to pay for them. We are in a print world now. 4.19.2013

How Many Times Can Paper be Recycled?
It is well understood that paper fibers cannot be recycled indefinitely. The US EPA indicates that papers can be recycled an estimated 4-7 times and the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry (TAPPI) cites 5-7 times. The range of reuse depends on both the type of fiber and the subsequent treatment of that fiber. Longer stronger fibers, like softwood kraft fibers used in paper bags, will generally survive longer than a shorter weaker fiber - such as a mechanically pulped hardwood used in newsprint and some magazine grades. 4.16.2013

The Reading Brain in the Digital Age: The Science of Paper versus Screens
How exactly does the technology we use to read change the way we read? How reading on screens differs from reading on paper is relevant not just to the youngest among us, but to just about everyone who reads—to anyone who routinely switches between working long hours in front of a computer at the office and leisurely reading paper magazines and books at home; to people who have embraced e-readers for their convenience and portability, but admit that for some reason they still prefer reading on paper; and to those who have already vowed to forgo tree pulp entirely. 4.15.2013

5 Reasons Green Marketing Is Going Nowhere
Sometimes it’s hard to face reality, especially when a dream is so alluring. And the alluring dream of green marketing is this: that consumers would cast a vote in favor of a more just and sustainable world whenever they shop. But the reality has been vastly different. For well over 20 years, consumers haven’t been willing to vote with their dollars. The reasons are many and complex, but the result is clearcut: With the exception of some energy-saving devices, no green product has captured more than a tiny slice of the marketplace, at least in the U.S. 3.13.2013

Going Paperless Doesn't Mean Going Green, The NY Times Proves
Perhaps we can finally say goodbye to those simplistic "Go green, go paperless" promotional campaigns. There's nothing particularly green about the massive data centers that store the internet's data, The New York Times revealed this past weekend after in-depth investigation. Data centers waste electricity and spew pollutants in a way that "is sharply at
odds with its [the information industry's] image of sleek efficiency and environmental friendliness," the lengthy but clearly written "Power, Pollution, and the Internet" says. 9.24.2012

Why Should Readers Buy the Sunday Paper if They Can Read It on the Web First?
As to whether we’re accelerating the move away from print because of the small sample of stories we publish early, we don’t think so. We think we’re striking the right balance, for now, for both digital and print subscribers. Many agree. We surveyed a sample of our Sunday newspaper subscribers recently about what they thought. Most felt picking some stories for early digital publication didn’t make a difference in their reading experience. Of the remainder, nearly three times as many said it improved their reading experience in print as felt it detracted from it. 9.19.2012

Paper Print and the Environment
LOS ANGELES, June 25, 2012 /PRNewswire via COMTEX/ -- Print on paper isn't depleting our forests, overwhelming our landfills, or causing global warming. Toshiba's No-Print Day is Awkward and Scandalous, But Don’t Let It Divert You from Bigger Trends
Last week’s announcement of Toshiba’s No-Print Day for October 23, with its supporting website and video, was rather scandalous. “Everybody knows” that using paper is “bad,” so the idea of proposing such a day had to seem like a real no- brainer. Just a hunt around cyberspace could provide needed data, and off the campaign went. Now we’re stuck with effects of their sloppiness while they're stuck with their own marketing shallowness. I'm sure it seemed like a slam-dunk daring marketing idea at the time. 6.19.2012

Toshiba – Greenwashing Company of the Year
We often get some rather stupid approaches by companies trying to put out marketing messages to enhance their position in the eyes of potential consumers. David Rosman: Print is more satisfying than pixels
What is the future of the truly printed word? It depends on the attitude of the respondent. Multimedia is here to stay, but ink is always better than pixel. Self-publishing fuels growth of print books
The romance with the printed word shows no signs of abating. Despite the rapid growth in e-book sales in recent years, print
book output in 2011 grew by 6%, to 347,178 titles, compared to the prior year. "Much as e-books have been the sexier topic
over the past few years, most people still read print books," noted Michael Norris, a senior analyst with publishing research firm
Simba Information. "If you talk to the given self-published author, some will admit they get a certain amount of pleasure from
holding a physical book, signing it, and giving it as a gift—something that you just can't do with e-books," he said. 6.6.2012

Hard copy vs. soft copy: Is digital storage greener than traditional media?
Reproduced from Climate Action, 2 March 2012, by Alan Bouquet.
"The problem it seems does not lie with the type of media being used, but the sustainability of the processes behind it. An email sent using a low energy highly efficient server will be considerably greener than one on an inefficient server. On the other hand, this applies to physical media as well; paper produced from a sustainably sourced forest, disposed of or recycled mindfully can be carbon neutral or better." 3.8.2012
